Discover What It Takes to Qualify for an Oscar!

Oscar-qualifying festivals are prestigious film events that offer a pathway for short films to reach Oscar nominations under special conditions. If a film wins a qualifying award at such a festival, like Best Short Live-Action, Documentary, or Animated Film, it becomes eligible for inclusion on the prestigious Oscars Long List. This system enhances independent creators' chances for international recognition and provides filmmakers with a vital platform for showcasing their work, especially in the realm of short films.

Currently, there are over 181 film festivals that qualify short films for the Oscars Long List. These festivals are spread worldwide, with the highest concentration in the USA. Just a few days ago, the Academy Awards announced and assigned new qualifying statuses to certain film festivals. Several newly added Oscar-qualifying film festivals for 2024 have expanded the opportunity for international filmmakers to have their works considered for Academy Award nominations. Here’s an overview of some of these prestigious festivals:

1. Balinale (Bali International Film Festival) 
Established in 2007 in Bali, Indonesia, Balinale provides a unique platform for showcasing films from both Indonesian and international filmmakers. This Hungarian festival has a reputation for presenting bold and innovative short films, primarily focusing on fresh voices in cinema from Central and Eastern Europe, now attracting even more international entries due to its Oscar-qualifying status.

4. Dallas International Film Festival (Texas, USA) 
Recognized for screening a diverse selection of films, Dallas has built a strong local following while attracting filmmakers globally. It fosters new talent, industry networking, and has a strong influence in regional and international film circles.


5. International Alexandria Short Film Festival (Egypt) 
This Egyptian festival focuses on short films and provides a platform for Arab filmmakers to reach international audiences, emphasizing the region's storytelling and cultural heritage.


6. Santa Fe International Film Festival (New Mexico, USA) 
Santa Fe’s festival has a focus on independent cinema with an emphasis on Native American and Latino voices, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of the American Southwest.


7. Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) 
LALIFF promotes Latino voices in Hollywood and beyond. Known for highlighting emerging Latino talent, this festival plays a significant role in diversifying the cinematic landscape in the U.S.

8. Beirut Shorts International Film Festival 
Held in the heart of Beirut, the Beirut Shorts International Film Festival is a significant platform for short films from around the globe. The festival promotes diversity and cultural exchange, focusing on artistic creativity and innovation. With its Oscar-qualifying status, the festival now holds special value for directors, offering a chance to showcase their work and gain broader recognition.

9. San Jose International Short Film Festival
Located in California, the San Jose International Short Film Festival is renowned for screening high-quality short films across various genres. The festival provides a professional space for both emerging and experienced filmmakers to reach audiences in Silicon Valley. With its recent Oscar-qualifying designation, it has become even more attractive to those aiming for recognition and the possibility of entering the prestigious Oscar race. the U.S.


10. Vilnius Short Film Festival
