Czech Film “Caravan”
Heads to Cannes!

The official selection for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival has been revealed, and one film that has already caught the attention of audiences and critics alike is “Caravan”, a Czech-Slovak film directed by Zuzana Kirchnerová. Selected for the prestigious Un Certain Regard section, Caravan tells the emotional story of Ester, a mother who embarks on a journey through Italy with her 12-year-old son, David, who has mental disabilities. The film explores themes of motherhood, personal sacrifice, and the challenges of caring for a child with special needs, offering a sensitive and poignant portrayal of life’s struggles.

This selection is an important milestone not only for Kirchnerová but also for Czech and Slovak cinema, as Caravan marks a significant presence at one of the most prestigious festivals in the world. It follows in the footsteps of the director’s earlier successes, including her short film Bába, which was featured at the Cannes Cinéfondation section in 2008. The selection of Caravan further solidifies the growing recognition of Eastern European filmmakers on the global stage

While Caravan shines as one of the key highlights of the selection, Cannes 2025 is set to feature a diverse and exciting lineup that promises to showcase some of the most anticipated films of the year. The selection includes the latest works from some of the most celebrated filmmakers in cinema today. Ari Aster, known for his unsettling films Hereditary and Midsommar, is bringing his latest psychological thriller to the festival, sparking anticipation for its chilling and thought-provoking narrative. With Aster’s mastery of tension and atmosphere, this film is expected to be one of the standout pieces of the competition.

At the same time, Wes Anderson, the director celebrated for his visually distinctive and whimsical style, returns to Cannes with a new film that promises to deliver his trademark symmetry, vibrant colors, and quirky characters. With a star-studded cast, Anderson’s latest project will undoubtedly captivate audiences with its playful and meticulously crafted world.

The competition also features a new drama from Richard Linklater, the celebrated director known for his humanistic storytelling and exploration of time in films like Boyhood. Linklater’s latest film, set to make its debut at Cannes, promises to continue his exploration of deep, character-driven narratives. Expect a thoughtful examination of relationships, identity, and the passage of time—hallmarks of Linklater’s work.

In addition to Caravan, the Un Certain Regard section includes a number of other standout films that reflect the diversity of contemporary cinema. Carla Simón’s Romería, which explores the annual pilgrimage of a rural Spanish community, brings a quiet yet deeply emotional perspective to the screen, showcasing Simón’s talent for intimate, observational storytelling. The film joins the ranks of others that have resonated with audiences in the past, and Simón’s work continues to capture the hearts of festivalgoers.

Meanwhile, Oliver Laxe brings his Moroccan-set drama Sirat to Cannes, a film that tackles complex themes of identity and belonging. With striking cinematography and a gripping narrative, Sirat promises to be one of the most visually arresting films in this year’s lineup. In a similar vein, Diego Cépedes’ La misteriosa mirada del Flamenco captures the soul of Spain with its visually powerful depiction of flamenco dance, a film that has already garnered attention for its bold cinematographic choices.

This year’s Cannes also celebrates the increasing presence of women directors, with Juliette Binoche making history as the second woman in a row to lead the prestigious jury. Her role underscores the growing importance of female filmmakers in global cinema, and the festival continues to highlight films that reflect diverse voices and perspectives.

With an exciting mix of established and emerging talents, Cannes 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most thrilling editions in recent years. From groundbreaking narratives to visually stunning spectacles, this year’s lineup promises to offer something for every cinephile. The selection includes films that explore human experiences in deeply personal and often groundbreaking ways, making it an unmissable event for both filmmakers and audiences around the world.

As Cannes 2025 approaches, all eyes will be on the films selected to compete for the coveted Palme d'Or, and with Caravan representing the Czech and Slovak cinema in Un Certain Regard, there is much to look forward to. Whether it’s the haunting new film from Ari Aster, the whimsical world of Wes Anderson, or the intimate portraits from emerging filmmakers like Simón and Laxe, Cannes 2025 promises to be a festival brimming with talent and cinematic innovation.
